Civet Versus Mongoose

Last night there are some noises heard in the chicken coop of Mr. Brown. This morning, when Mr. Brown checked his own chicken coop, he found that one of his chicken is lost. “Uh, it must be stolen by civet” he said. After he investigated, finally he found that not the civet who stole his chicken, but the mongoose. Did you know what the difference between civet and mongoose?

Civet lives in trees and active in night time. Its fur is brown or black. Upper part of its body is grey or dark red. Its forehead and side of the face are white. And there are black lined in its nose, forehead and its head.

Civet likes ripe fruits, such as mango, papaya, banana, rambutan, sugar palm fruit, and coffee fruit when it red. The seed of fruit that has been eaten by civet then will be excreted through the feces. The seed of coffee, rambutan, and sugar palm fruit that excreted through its feces usually will grow as a new seedling.

For peoples who live in rural area, civet is the good friend for farmer. Civet will help them to cultivating sugar palm tree and coffee naturally. In the coffee producer area, civet are taken care and maintained for producing luwak coffee bean which have good price in market.

Mongoose lives in holes underground. Mongoose likes to walk around in the bush or savanna. Sometime it been seen crossing the road.

At a glance, this animal is like a civet. But, the body shape is smaller and thinner than civet. Mongoose fur is red colored and its tail longer than its body.

Mongoose is carnivore. It likes to hunts rat and snake, also it likes to hunts birds, frogs, lizards, scorpions, grasshopper, crickets, crabs, and chicken.

Some people considered that mongoose is a pest. But, in many countries, mongoose was used in plantation for controlling rats which are damaging rice and sugar cane.
